The Transportation for Tourists in Cuba
There are several transportation means for tourists in Cuba. The choice of the transport depends on the travel plan, the destination and the places to visit.
It is limited the number of cars in Cuba and it is not enough for the touristy demand. In general, the cars of rent have very high prices, the cheapest ones can cost about 80-90 CUC daily (1 euro is about 1.10 CUC), while the newest models can reach a price over 200 CUC per day. It is advisable to contact the car rental agencies in advance to try to guarantee a car for the staying in Cuba. Out of Cuba in several countries there are Havanatur agencies and some airlines with flights to Cuba which offer the service to rent a car in Cuba.
To travel among provinces the cheapest option is Viazul agency. A travel between Havana and Santiago de Cuba (located almost in opposite sides of Cuba) costs only about 50 CUC. Also there are private taxis which have higher prices, although they are more comfortable and faster than the buses. The price depends on the deal with the taxi driver.
In Havana there are collective taxis called Almendrón which price is only around 10 CUP and 20 CUP (1 CUC = 24 CUP) according to the ride. These taxis are very popular among Cubans. To take a tour for the main places in Havana it is possible to rent an American convertible taxi which price is about 30 CUC per hour. Besides, the Hop-On Hop-Off HabanaBusTour service offers a tour in Havana for a price of only 5 CUC.
In cities there are other options of transportation like taxis Panataxi and Cubataxi, the Cocotaxi (taxi with a shape of a coconut) and carriages pulled by horses to enjoy a nice ride.
